A return line is needed to control pressure if the pump will deliver more than the desired spray pressure or the pressure drops below the needed pressure. The return line function is to return varying amounts of by pass fluid to keep the system spray spraying at a constant pressure with varying amounts of volumes being sprayed from the pressure side of the system.
