It is a solenoid that has an imbedded computer chip that senses electrical flow and provides full power (amperage) to the valve for 1 second and then reduces the power to about 1/3 the amount rated on the valve while the valve is open. This saves electrical load on the system and the valve will remain open with the temperature maintaining about 10'F over ambient temperature regardless if it is running wet or dry.
